University of Miami Lab creates ‘Hurricanes on Demand’

The University of Miami’s Marine Technology and Life Sciences Seawater Research Complex features the Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. SUSTAIN (SUrge-STructure-Atmosphere INteraction) lab, the world’s only hurricane simulator able to generate Category 5 hurricane-force winds with swells and sea spray. These simulated storm conditions will help researchers solve some of the mysteries of storms and hopefully save lives.

Robert C. Jones takes provides an in-depth look at the groundbreaking research performed by the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

The SUSTAIN tank was also featured on MentalFloss.com and Nature.com.
